Southwood opened its doors in the spring of 1982 at the corner of 71st Street and Riverside Drive in Tulsa, Oklahoma. What began as a small landscape design firm has grown into one of Oklahoma’s largest retail garden centers. Southwood also offers a full-service landscape design company and produces high quality local plants.
The company moved to its present location at 91st Street and Lewis Avenue in 1985. As the surrounding area of Jenks/Southwest Tulsa grew, so did the nursery. The garden center now encompasses 5 acres and includes a 25,000 square–foot, state-of-the-art greenhouse and wide, inviting sidewalks that offer shoppers a pleasant stroll through the grounds. Younger visitors enjoy pedaling red and blue tricycles around the displays.
In 2002, Southwood expanded again, with the addition of growing facilities on South Delaware Ave. The nursery now grows many of its own products — such as pansies, roses, mums, and summer annuals — using Southwood’s special potting mix and fertilizers to improve plant quality and size.
Celebrating its 30th year in 2012, Southwood is still a family-run operation, headed by native Tulsans Joe and Ginny Schulte and their daughters Margaret Schulte and Brenda Baird.
